toni_smithFebruary, like Virginia, is for lovers. Well, maybe not exactly, but February is a celebration of people and relationships - love, like and in between. What better way to celebrate February than by curling up on the couch with your favorite somebody and sharing a movie? This month’s movies are not exactly Romantic comedies, but more like a movie you could watch with your boyfriend or girlfriend, husband or wife, or just someone special whose company you enjoy.

50 First Dates (2004)
Comedic genius, Adam Sandler teams with Drew Barrymore in this flick about love and what it means to share that special feeling with someone. Sandler plays Henry, a veterinarian afraid of commitment, until he meets beautiful Lucy. Lucy, a school teacher, suffers from short-term memory loss, and can’t remember meeting Henry. With each new day, Henry has to “introduce” himself to her. Sandler and Barrymore have true chemistry, both in comedy and romance. Set in Hawaii, this film uses much of the local scenery, not to mention some very cute sea creatures. Rated PG-13 for some sexual humor and drug references.

French Kiss (1995)
Meg Ryan is at her best and cutest in this film. She plays clumsy school teacher, Kate, set to win back her fiancé after he finds another, more exciting woman while on a business trip to Paris. Kate meets up with Luc, played expertly by Kevin Kline, while on the airplane to France. Luc has a hidden agenda but realizes that helping Kate win back the love of Charlie will help him achieve his goals. A series of mishaps ensue, and in the end, love blossoms. This is a super fun flick, enjoyable for all ages. Rated PG-13 for some sexuality, language and drug references.

Moonstruck (1987)
This romantic comedy garnered three Oscars including Best Actress for Cher and Best Supporting Actress for Olympia Dukakis. Cher plays Loretta, an unlucky in love woman who, through a series of events that occur during the full moon, finds love and happiness. Though this movie is legally able to drink, it’s a classic that is timeless. It’s a movie all about relationships and what we do to make them work within the confines of a very Italian, New York family. Outstanding supporting cast including Danny Aiello, Vincent Gardenia, and John Mahoney of Frasier Fame. You will smile the whole time you watch this film. Rated PG, but remember that was 22 years ago, so some standards may have changed. Worth the watch, though!

Ocean’s Eleven (2001)
Sure, it isn’t a romantic comedy, but this film still works as a great date movie. This George Clooney, version is a re-imagining of the 1960 flick of the same name starring the “Rat Pack”, led by Frank Sinatra. That’s some pretty big shoes to fill, but Clooney and his band of merry men do a great job, led by director Steven Soderbergh. Danny Ocean and his crew plot to steal millions of dollars from the Bellagio Casino in Las Vegas. Julia Roberts, who plays Ocean’s ex-wife, throws a chink in the chain when it is revealed that she is dating the casino’s head honcho. Action packed and suspenseful, your less romantically oriented partner or friend will thank you for this choice. Rated PG-13 for some language and sexual content.
